There has been a lot in the news lately about the dramatic transformation Vijay Sing and Camillo Villegas have both had in their putting. When interviewed both responded that they had changed their beliefs. Instead of thinking they were just so-so putters they began to believe they were the best putters in the world. Vijay was the first to turn it around then Camillo gained inspiration from Vijay’s dramatic improvement. These guys have access to sports psychologists, trainers and have hit more shots than you probably will in a lifetime. Dramatic improvement in their putting however didn’t occur until they resolutely believed they were the best putters in the world. It took them years and lots of sessions with their psychologists to finally arrive at that conclusion. With EFT you have a tool that can provide you with just as dramatic a turnaround when used properly. And it can be accomplished rather quickly.
Putting more than any other part of golf probably causes more fear, panic and frustration. Putting can save you strokes or cost you dearly. It’s particularly frustrating when you consider that a two foot putt counts the same as a 250 yard drive. Interestingly putting is the one area that you can develop your skill to that of a touring pro the quickest and easiest. Think about it. Tour Pro’s hit crisp irons at the flag that hit the green and spin back to the hole. Their drives fly anywhere from 270 to 300 yards. You would need hours upon hours of practice, lesson after lesson and you would have to hit thousands upon thousands of balls to even approach that level.
Putting however is a different story. You and the pro putt from the same size green, from the same distances and can even use the same style putter. Neither strength or some fantastic hand eye co-ordination is required. Putting requires the ability to read a green, a consistent, tension free stroke and the belief that you will make the putt. You have to believe you will make the first putt and that if you miss you have to believe you will make the two or three footer that remains.
Practice Tapping Exercise. This assumes you have some working knowledge of EFT and what points to tap. If not watch please view the introduction videos. Of course if you really want to become proficient I encourage you to order the manual.
Q. What is your number one fear when you putt? The obvious answer is that you will miss. Alas, that is too easy. I want you to take a few minutes shut your eyes and visualize yourself on the putting green staring down a twenty foot putt. What is your fear? It may be fear of three putting or stubbing the putter in the ground or running the putt five feet past the hole. Tune into your physical sensations. Do you feel tension in your hands, arms, chest or shoulders. Is your stomach queasy? Maybe your hands shake so bad you can hardly pull the club back. You may have several fears and several physical responses. Each one of these is an “aspect” and you should deal with them separately. For our purposes we will select one and insert the problem into a set up phrase.
For example. “Even though I’m afraid I’ll putt the ball three feet past the hole I accept myself”. Repeat this entire phrase while tapping 3x on the karate chop point
Next we will use a reminder phrase “three feet past the hole”, this is simply a shorter version of the set-up. Repeat this phrase on each of the following points as you tap on them for 3 to 5 seconds. .
Top of head, eyebrow, side of eye, under eye, under nose, chin, collarbone, side of chest.
Repeat the entire sequence one more time, from the karate chop point through the eight other points. Now check back in to the original picture you created of yourself staring down that twenty footer. You should feel more relaxed. Now pick another new aspect of your fear such as “this queasy feeling in my stomach” and repeat the above process. Start on the Karate Chop point tap and say “even though I have this queasy feeling in my stomach when I putt, I completely accept myself”. Then use a shortcut phrase “queasy stomach” while tapping on the other eight points.
